International Tango Day is celebrated around the world each year on 11 December; the date being adopted by the Secretary of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires to mark the birthdays of vocalist Carlos Gardel and violinist / band leader Julio De Caro, both of whom made huge contributions to the evolution and development of tango music through the 1920s and 1930s.
In 2023, the day was celebrated in Auckland with a sold-out concert and milonga at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, featuring live music by AOTANGO as well as stage and social dancing by members of the Auckland tango dance community.
This year AOTANGO will again take the lead, playing live concerts and milongas on 6, 9 and 10 December in Auckland, Palmerston North and Wellington.
The venue for the Friday 6 December Auckland event will be Westlake Girls Event Centre in Takapuna.
The evening will begin with a concert by AOTANGO featuring tango and world music, showcasing guest dancers and singers. After an intermission, the floor will open for a social milonga, where dancers of all levels can enjoy tandas of tango, milonga and vals.
You can dance along or enjoy a diverse selection of Latin American dishes from Argentine, Chilean, and Uruguayan food vendors, accompanied by a variety of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages from JJs Bar Service.
